What is pediatric speech therapy?

Speech therapy helps children understand language, express themselves and communicate in social situations. It also supports the sounds of speech, fluency and, when needed, alternative ways to communicate such as picture systems or speech-generating devices.

For children who also receive ABA, our speech-language pathologists will coordinate goals with the BCBA so that the same words and strategies are practiced across every session.

Speech therapy can help children who

  • Are late talkers or use fewer words than expected for their age
  • Are hard to understand or have trouble with certain sounds
  • Have difficulty following directions or understanding questions
  • Struggle with conversation, turn-taking or social language
  • Are minimally verbal and may benefit from AAC
  • Stutter or have other fluency concerns

What we work on

Receptive language

Understanding words, directions, questions and stories.

Expressive language

Vocabulary, combining words, sentences and telling about their day.

Articulation

Producing speech sounds clearly so others can understand.

Social communication

Greetings, conversation, reading cues and playing with peers.

AAC

Picture exchange, sign and speech-generating devices for children who need them.

Family coaching

Simple ways to build language into everyday routines at home.

How speech therapy works

  1. 1

A licensed speech-language pathologist evaluates your child’s communication using play, observation and standardized tests, and talks with you about your concerns.

  2. 2

Together we set goals and a schedule. Sessions are play-based and take place at home or, when it helps, at school. You will get ideas to practice between sessions.

Speech therapy questions

Does my child need a diagnosis for speech therapy?

No autism diagnosis is needed. Usually a prescription or referral from your child’s doctor is required, plus an evaluation by a speech-language pathologist.

Do you offer speech therapy in Spanish?

That is our plan. When speech therapy launches, we will support bilingual families and work in the language your child uses at home. Join the waitlist to be the first to know.
